How does this initiative build a healthier community?
Communities with a greater rate of volunteerism will benefit through:

improved organization of community volunteerism;

increased recognition of the value of the volunteer sector;

increased personal sense of satisfaction amongst volunteers; and

increased interest in the future of the community.

How will this happen?
In partnership with volunteer sector agencies, foundations, corporate givers, community governments and government agencies, MACA proposes to design a co-ordinated system of volunteer development and promotion.

What will this initiative do?
Work with the voluntary sector in the design of a NWT Volunteer Strategy that considers:

the GNWT's role in supporting the voluntary sector;

providing support to non-profit and volunteer organizations that aid in improving community quality of life; and

creating a greater public awareness of the importance and value of volunteerism.

What kind of short-term results would we like to achieve?
The development of a NWT Volunteer Strategy that results in:

increased information and awareness of the importance and value of volunteerism;

an increase in the level of volunteerism in NWT communities;

a network of support for volunteer organizations; and

increased capacity of the voluntary sector.

Volunteers make up a vibrant sector that is eager to continue contributing to the social and economic health of the NWT. There are many registered societies and charities in the NWT. Many more people volunteer in their communities in less formal ways. Traditionally people volunteered out of a sense of charity or obligation; today people volunteer for other reasons; some want to make new friends, others want to help their neighbors and some want to gain job skills. With better support to the volunteer sector MACA believes that the overall quality of life of NWT residents will be improved.
