Goal
To improve the quality and quantity of training opportunities for community governments.

How does this build community capacity?
Improved access to training opportunities specifically designed for community governments that will result in:
  • more local staff with the knowledge and skills to fill community government jobs;
  • advancement opportunities through the local community government career ladder.
How will this happen?
MACA has established a School of Community Government (S of CG) in partnership with Aurora College, Education, Culture and Employment (ECE), other GNWT, federal, aboriginal and territorial organizations and the private sector. The purpose of the S of CG is to support community capacity building by designing and supporting an integrated system of skill development and training opportunities for community governments in a scheduled and respected learning environment.

What kind of things will this initiative do?
  • Establish a Governance Committee, made up of senior aboriginal and territorial organization leaders and senior GNWT & federal officials;
  • In partnership with community governments, ECE and industry, establish technical program advisory committee to guide the development of training programs;
  • Develop and implement a human resource planning system to identify training priorities, assess capacity and evaluate employee performance and training requirements;
  • Organize collaborative partnerships with NWT, federal, territorial and aboriginal organizations to coordinate training towards a "one-stop-shop" for community administrative training;
  • Research new and needed programs and services;
  • Develop and maintain and up-to-date calendar and schedule of training opportunities; and
  • Establish articulation and transfer agreements with accredited post-secondary institutions and professional associations.
What kind of short-term results do we want to achieve?
  • Developed job descriptions and occupational standards.
  • Completion and implementation of a Community Government Human Resource System.
  • A complete schedule of training opportunities.
  • Increase the number of Northerners employed in community government positions.
