Goal
To help NWT residents become healthier and more balanced.

How does this initiatve build community capacity?
Improved support to territorial and community-based health, sport & recreation organizations will result in:
  • improved information on the benefits of healthy living and lifestyles;
  • increased community-based planning for healthy communities;
  • increased participation in healthy lifestyles;
  • more emphasis on prevention versus treatment; and
  • reduced social problems and costs.

How will this happen?
In partnership with GNWT departments, federal agencies, aboriginal organizations, the NWT Recreation and Parks Association, the Aboriginal Sport Circle of the Western Arctic, community recreation personnel and Sport North, MACA proposes to design a coordinated system of sport, health, and recreation.

What will this initiative do?
  • Develop public and community awareness of the link between healthy living, community sport, traditional games, recreation, fitness and quality of life;
  • Create awareness of community and personal responsibility for healthy living;
  • Develop more effective interagency cooperation between health care and healthy living systems; and
  • Support the NWT agenda for children and youth in the design of new programs to support this initiative.

What kind of short-term results do we want to achieve?
  • An increase in the physical activity levels of NWT residents.
  • Improved linkages in community and agency program delivery.
  • Improved connections between the health care and program delivery systems.

Organized community sport and recreation provides more benefits to communities than just healthier residents. Community sport and recreation also brings athletes, parents and community residents together in social networks. These networks establish community values and encourage youth to be future productive members of society. Community networks provide information in a broad range of areas from the importance of education, to expectation of behavior, to the dangers of drug and alcohol abuse. Community networks help establish community norms and contribute to the quality of life of both individuals and the entire community.
